Cape Buffalo Calibre Requirements

We uphold the highest standards of safety, ethics, and professionalism when hunting dangerous game. For Cape buffalo, a minimum calibre of .375 H&H Magnum or .375 Ruger, loaded with a 300-grain premium bullet, is required to ensure adequate penetration, stopping power, and a quick, humane harvest.

Experienced hunters may also choose from a selection of proven big-bore dangerous game calibres, including the .416 Rigby, .404 Jeffery, .450 Rigby, .458 Winchester Magnum, and .458 Lott. These calibres are well suited for close encounters in Africa’s bushveld and are trusted worldwide for buffalo hunting.

We strongly advise all clients to bring a dangerous game rifle that they are comfortable and confident shooting, as familiarity and accuracy are critical factors in ensuring a safe, ethical, and successful hunt.

All calibre requirements comply with professional hunting regulations and reflect our commitment to ethical, fair-chase hunting and client safety.

Recommended Bullet Types
For Cape buffalo hunting, we strongly recommend the use of premium-quality dangerous game bullets designed for deep penetration, controlled expansion, and maximum weight retention.

Expanding soft-point bullets are typically used for the first shot, providing reliable expansion and effective energy transfer. These bullets should be of the highest quality and specifically engineered for dangerous game hunting.
Non-expanding solid bullets are recommended for follow-up shots, particularly in close encounters where deep, straight-line penetration through heavy bone and dense muscle is require.

Popular and proven bullet options include Barnes TSX, Hornady DGX, Swift A-Frame, Woodleigh, Federal Premium, and Norma dangerous game ammunition, all manufactured by reputable brands with a long-standing and proven track record in Africa.

Your Outfitter and Professional Hunter will advise on the most suitable bullet selection and shot placement to ensure a safe, ethical, and successful Cape buffalo hunt.
